Late push carries Red Wings over Flames

Hockey Betting Lines

11/23/2008 - Calgary, AB (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jiri Hudler notched the game-winning goal late in the third period and assisted on another score as Detroit put away Calgary, 5-2, with a late surge at the Saddledome.

Pavel Datsyuk also had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who posted their fifth straight win and have earned at least a point in each of their last eight games (7-0-1). Detroit already owned one five-game win streak this season, and equaled its season-best feat from October 18-27 on Saturday.

Andreas Lilja had two assists while Ty Conklin got the start between the pipes and picked up the win with 31 saves. Detroit improved to an NHL-best 10-1-1 this season on the road, where the club has won five straight, and wraps up a three-game tour of western Canada in Vancouver on Monday.

Curtis Glencross registered a goal and an assist while Mark Giordano scored the other goal for the Flames, who had won three of their last four games coming in.

Miikka Kiprusoff needed to make just 18 saves to post his second shutout of the season in Thursday's 1-0 blanking of Colorado, but allowed four goals on 36 shots Saturday to take the loss.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the third, Henrik Zetterberg was taken down in the corner and a delayed penalty call on Calgary brought Hudler on as an extra man off the bench. He rushed into the zone and took a pass from Zetterberg for a screaming one-timer that netted the go-ahead score with 8:39 left.

Datsyuk then split two defenders and fired a shot from just outside the left circle that found the net with just 1:31 left to play. Marian Hossa added an empty-netter with 5.6 seconds left.

Kirk Maltby got things going with the lone goal of the opening period, lighting the lamp just 4:26 into the game on a feed from Lilja.

Brett Lebda broke out of his own zone and up the right boards before cutting across the high slot and letting fly a sharp wrist shot that sailed through traffic and past Kiprusoff for a 2-0 game with 8:14 left in the second.

Less than a minute later, the Flames answered with their first goal, making it a 2-1 game. Craig Conroy shoveled a pass over to Glencross behind the net and he skated to the right of Conklin before firing the puck up high and past the goaltender on the short side.

A Wings turnover in the neutral zone allowed Calgary to tie the game 6:52 into the third. Jarome Iginla got the puck and shot up the left boards, dropping a pass back to Giordano for a blast that beat Conklin.

Game Notes

Though the Flames lost three of four to the Red Wings a year ago, Calgary has beaten them in four of the last seven at home...The Flames had won three in a row as the host overall and are still a solid 7-3-1 at Pengrowth Saddledome this year.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
